Here’s another writing challenge — or more like a creativity booster. We’re starting off the same way as last week: pick an object. Ask yourself, “What is that?” and answer 5-10 times.
The catch: you can’t say what it actually is. Make stuff up!
How about this thing? What is it?

Don’t say you-know-what! Try to imagine what it could be. A high-fashion shoe for a dog? A capsule hotel for ants? Go crazy!
Think like Ariel and her friend Scuttle from The Little Mermaid. They thought you comb your hair with a fork and make music with a tobacco pipe! Why not? You could, couldn’t you?
How to Apply it to Your Writing
Imagination is seeing things differently — looking beyond what is. It came to us easily when we were kids, but school and life circumstances snuffed it out. Now, we need to retrain our brains.
This doesn’t just help with writing stories. It also helps in everyday life. Out-of-the-box thinking and problem solving are essential skills for the workforce, especially if you want to start your own business (like I am right now!).
Try this exercise and tell me what you think!
